36 Hours Later...

Updated: Nov 28, 2018

What a weekend! We had four amazing teams come together to work tirelessly for 36 hours to build an app in our first ever virtual hackathon!

What is a hackathon? Hackathons have grown to become a global movement. By fast‐tracking the software, hardware and business development processes, hackathons provide participants with focused and valuable technical skills. Layer in the creative design and user-experience considerations along with the fundamental business hurdles likely to be faced and participants will develop entrepreneurial skills that are rarely taught in the school curriculum. They learn by doing and finish with a final project that has the potential to turn into a real business.

What was the point? Healthy emotional and social development in the early years of one’s development lays down the foundation for mental health and resilience throughout life. But what happens when a child doesn’t always get the emotional and social support that they need or feel they need? In Canada, an estimated 1.2 million children and youth are affected by mental illness. Only 1 out of 5 of these youth who need mental health services receives them. The remaining 4 out of 5 are on their own, searching for information to help themselves or their friends. We wanted to address this issue.

Now what? The teams were called to focus on the design of a software solution that would address youth mental health and wellness, and ultimately become the foundation of a youth-run social enterprise business where we could assist youth in learning entrepreneurial skills while giving back to our youth. YOUTH HELPING YOUTH! Congratulations! We would like to acknowledge all of our partners, sponsors, volunteers, mentors, judges, participants, staff, and community members that came together to help us over the weekend. This was an amazing event with some amazing results.

We would like to congratulate the top three teams, in this order, Company Connect, Hope Springs Eternals, an Yoyopomo! Congratulations and thank you for all your hard work!
